A person in California has become the first in the U.S. to have an identified case of the omicron variant of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Nigeria has detected its first case of the omicron coronavirus variant in a sample it collected in October, weeks before South Africa alerted the world about the variant last week, the country’s national public health institute said Wednesday.
The omicron variant, now reported in multiple Canadian provinces and a growing number of countries worldwide, could threaten hard-won immunity to the virus behind COVID-19. But there’s hope the highly mutated variant won’t bring the world back to “square one” in this pandemic.
“I’m reporting we have now one confirmed case of the omicron variant in Alberta,” Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, told a news conference Tuesday.
